Accomplishments
2009
2009 began with cleanup of the Turner, Boyscout, Pine Mt., Tower Mt., Hawthorne, Taconic Crest and Lulu trails of hundreds of downed trees from the December Ice Storm. We also cleared trees on the Family loop and all the other “ghost” trails. 2009 was a very rainy year and the ground was so saturated trees were falling down all year long. We cleared trees from all the trails again and again and again all summer.
In early August, Harry and Bill lead a group doing some impressive rock armoring in Beartown.
In late August, we got permission to clear the Lulu Brook Trail all the way to the top. This involved about a month of chainsawing followed by a couple months of bench cutting work. We only had 7 different people help out on this trail but it is coming out awesome!
We have tried to get permission to legalize several trails which constitute the Family Trail and have run into issues where land that is marked as State land is actually private property.
We have also tried to legalize 6-mile from the top of Potter Mt. Road down to the brook. It passed the Endangered Species review, but Mass Historic has not returned their review of this project.
Both of those projects have been held up for months and it's very frustrating.
2008
After many difficulties and long delays getting permission, we finally got approval to reconstruct the Turner Trail to make it into a sustainable trail. We had an incredible number of people come out and help us build that trail and it came out just beautiful.
